AU Backstory:
Here's some in-universe info + historical background! It’s common headcanon in the BASARA fandom to use the majority of historical background in the characters’ backstory (where it makes sense, anyway - but it does do a good job of expanding on Masamune’s character in his case).

In this AU, the characters are technically reincarnated, born and raised in the modern era, and a lot of them sometimes will have flashes of memory of their past selves. Masamune hasn't been subjected to this as much as some of the older characters have (such as Kojuro and Takeda Shingen), even though there are some impulses that he can't really explain that are flashes of who he was when he was Dokuganryū. For example, he and one Sanada Yukimura, despite barely knowing each other, feel a mutual sense of rivalry; though they do eventually end up becoming good friends in the process.

Masamune himself is the heir to a fairly influential business group within Japan, though unfortunately he didn’t have most gentle of childhoods. Masamune ended up losing sight in his right eye in this era due to a combination of birth complications and a tumor. Because of the tumor, there were many that advised that his mother, Yoshihime, would have Masamune sent to a hospital that specialized in dealing with that sort of thing so that Masamune would not have to worry about the possibility of complications later on. However, she refused, forcing Masamune to be in a quarantine-like isolation room almost constantly as a child while she doted on Kojirou, Masamune's younger brother.

A few years passed on like this, until one day, when Masamune's salvation came to that very hospital – Katakura Kojuro. The two didn't realize it then, but they were connected, and even though Kojuro was supposed to be helping take care of Kojirou, he felt an obligation to take care of Masamune instead. Surprisingly, Terumune eventually caught wind of this and allowed Masamune to be put under Kojuro's care for the time being - against Yoshihime’s wishes. This also allowed Masamune to get his bad eye removed, giving him his trademark eyepatch.

After the surgery, Terumune allowed for Masamune to stay with Kojuro as he was recovering, noticing the difference in not only Masamune’s physical state, but his mental state as well. Yoshihime was less-than-pleased with the news - in her eyes, Masamune didn’t deserve to be treated this way and his missing eye was a sign that he wouldn’t have what it would take to run the company in the future. Because of this, she tried to plead with Terumune to keep Masamune in isolation after surgery and to set Kojirou up as the heir instead, but to no avail. Terumune saw this as an opportunity to see if Masamune would rise above and beyond this adversity.

So the arrangement was set - and even after Masamune’s full recovery, he stayed with Kojuro. Surprisingly there was no protest from either of his parents - which worried and relieved Kojuro at the same time. He was glad that Terumune trusted him enough to take care of his son and that he actually supported the decision, but no protests or any sort of reply from Yoshihime was troubling. Still, they fell into a steady routine after a while - Masamune would be in school most of the day, while Kojuro had classes part-time - a provision added by Terumune for an important reason (which I’ll get to in a bit). It wasn’t until Masamune was just starting high school that things started to change again.

When Masamune was heading home from school with a few people and his cousin Shigezane, the pair split off from the group to head home and were confronted by none other than Yoshihime herself. She tried to forcibly “convince” Masamune to give up his status as heir, but Shigezane was able to slip away and get Kojuro, who immediately left for the spot where Masamune was being confronted, but before he could get any answers from her, Yoshihime fled. Turned out the reason for the sudden reappearance of his mother was the fact that Terumune’s health was beginning to decline. Stress from outside companies had already started to take its toll on his health, and recent events hadn’t helped to make the situation any better. Masamune and Kojuro then visited him in the hospital a few days later, where Terumune revealed that until Masamune was of age and able to run the company, Kojuro would run it in his stead (explaining why he was so adamant about Kojuro going to college) - and that he was proud of his son for coming so far and that he should never give up his fighting spirit. He passed less than a week later.

Midway through his second year of high school, he gets a call from Yoshihime - but this time he refuses contact, figuring it another attempt to badger him into handing over the company to his little brother. In a sense, he was right - she did want to talk to him about the company and why she thought it was best to hand it over to her and Kojirou, but instead of persisting this time, she decides to leave the company and places her stakes in a rival business.

This didn’t bother Masamune all that much, but it did give him and Kojuro rights to be suspicious on what her activities were after a while, especially considering that she took Kojirou with her. Surprisingly, though, they haven’t heard much from her since then, some whispers among the gossipers, but outside that, there wasn’t much.

Fast forward through high school and we get to where we're at today. Masamune ended up going to university, and while he's finishing his education, Kojuro's been taking care of things in terms of running the family business. Masa still tries to get involved with the business when he can, although he understands that at this point school comes first. However, despite the urgings of the others and what he had originally planned, what was originally going to be a major in Business Management turned into International Studies, stemming from the love of reading English books as a child and throughout school. He’s also an active member of the kendo team, and practices fairly often when he isn’t out with friends or helping Kojuro out.

AU Differences (List form):
* Masamune has technically been reincarnated in the modern era.
* He is the heir to a prestigious business group rather than a warlord.
* The reason behind Masamune losing his eye is different: rather than smallpox, it was a combination of birth complications and a mostly-benign tumor that needed to be removed.
* Masamune has lived with Kojuro for the last ten years or so, ever since the surgery that was performed on his eye.
* His father dies from natural causes (though slightly forced due to stress from his competitors) rather than in a shoot-the-hostage situation like his historical counterpart.
* Masamune’s mother left after trying one last time to convince him to hand the company over to her, taking his younger brother Kojirou with her. (unlike his historical counterpart, he hasn’t had to murder his brother.)
* His sword skills are nowhere near his OU self, but he does know how to defend himself if need be.

Canon Standing: Midway through Masamune's sophomore year in college.

Personality:
At first glance, Masamune is a cocky jerk. He’s the type of person that plows into a situation without thinking, if only because he's in it for a good fight. First and foremost, he is a very ambitious person. He tries to do the best he can with the abilities and weapons he has at his disposal to accomplish his goals. However, he is by no means a cruel man. He cares deeply for the well-being of his subordinates and wants to see them succeed as much as he does. This is even shown in the AU, where he has on a few occasions gone out of his way to help those in need.

Masamune's overly confident, to be sure - but in his eyes that confidence is justified – he's strong in both body and mind. Unlike Yukimura and Keiji, he isn't as naïve about people and their intentions – he knows that there are some people that are just plain horrible and that there really is no way to get through to them outside of brute force. His past has also helped harden him and make him very strong-willed and stubborn: if someone tells him that he can’t do something, he’ll try doing it anyway just to spite them. He has gotten better about listening to authority, but at the same time, he feels that you have to earn his respect before he will consider what you have to say. Despite his moments of clarity when it comes to what he knows about the world around him, Masamune has a reckless streak – he tends to dive head-first into situations and leaves the strategy to Kojuro.

Masamune's confident in himself for the most part, but at the same time, he's still somewhat inexperienced. In the AU, he’s still trying to learn the ropes and hasn’t had the couple years of leadership experiences that his OU counterpart has. He does know the burden of his decision to take over despite Kojuro telling him about the risks, though. Masamune honestly wouldn't have it any other way – the boy enjoys a challenge; the fact that he picks fights with gangs that annoy him or has been known to take on certain people in kendo just to shut them up is testament to that fact.

He still has his fascination with things related to the West, and in this case, is pretty fluent in English – a favorite pastime of Masamune's outside of sparring is reading English books.

Unfortunately, his family is his biggest problem when it comes to trying to deal with anything around him. If someone asks him about his mother or father and don't already know about his situation before rising to the head position, he tends to close off or change the subject. He doesn't like talking about them and prefers to try and stay out of anything that deals with the term. Honestly, to him, Kojuro and his subordinates (and Shigezane) are more of his family than most of his blood relatives are.

Key Personality Differences:
For the most part, Masamune's personality is the same as he was in canon, keeping his key traits of being someone who loves being flashy, reckless, cool, and yet caring for those around him. Due to his past, he is a bit closed-off and distant at first, but once people get to know him, he’s actually really sweet under that reckless, fight-hungry persona. He's ambitious as well, but not to the point of being willing to murder or anything of the sort, unless someone he cared about was in massive danger (read: Kojuro or Shigezane) And also keeping with canon, he has a habit of sprinkling in English in his everyday speech. Unlike his canon counterpart, he hasn't had the camaraderie of the entire Date army (or just the company in the AU's case) to help him, so he's a bit more socially distant. He still loves a good party, though, and does like being around people.

List form:

* Not as ruthless
* Slightly more headstrong
* Actual knowledge of the West is higher
* More distant until you get to know him

Persona
[Senrima]
[Alright, so: in the original BASARA universe, Masamune has a special steed that has been given the nickname “motorhorse” due to its appearance. However, since there’s no Wiki link for it (and the most I can actually find is a small description of it on Masamune’s own wiki page), I found the closest thing to it in mythology. It will actually look more like this.]

Masamune wasn't sure what to make of what had just happened. One minute, he was heading back to his apartment after helping Yukimura with a quick study session, then the next, there was some guy with a mask yammering on about some thing or another. He really couldn't remember all of it.

Which was probably the first warning sign that something was up.

Now, Masamune had pretty much grown up around strange circumstances, so a lot of things didn't really phase him all that much. If they did, he at least was fairly good about keeping it under wraps. But even then, there were some things that went beyond his scope normally, this being one of those situations. It wasn't hard to keep his expression neutral, but there were little things, small nuances of his body language that betrayed his suspicion and confusion.

He pulled something out of his pants pocket - the ID that he had on him when he first woke up in this place. "Hinoto-Ri, huh." He snorted, shaking his head as he pocketed it. "Can't say I'm too enthusiastic about this party, but hell, why not." One way or another, though, he was going to probably punch out the idiot that thought that dragging him here was a good idea. Sure, it was a hell of a sidetrip, but at the same time, he had other things to worry about.

Then again, he could see this as another obstacle on his path to soaring the heavens. And anything that obstructed his path was take care of in one way or another. He was able to show that he was ready to do what was necessary in order to protect the legacy his father left behind, after all.

So with that in mind, he was on his way out to explore. If he was going to be somewhere he didn't recognize, it would at least be smart enough to try and get an idea of the area. If things were as weird as he remembered them being back home sometimes, then preparation was necessary. Kojuro would be proud of him for thinking ahead for once instead of recklessly charging ahead - though in a sense this could be considered that as well.
